Leggings Guide

Fashion is a mode of self-expression, yet when the chilly months arrive, the winter blues extend even to style. While snowstorms may be in the forecast, you can still put together cute winter outfits! Between holiday parties filling your social calendar and lazy days of lounging at home, cute leggings become a style necessity! When winter arrives, every wardrobe should be stylishly prepared with holiday prints, Nordic styles, and cozy fleece.

When holiday party invites start pouring in and date nights shift to the fire place, it’s time to snuggle into a pair of holiday leggings! There’s nothing so cherished about the season as time-honored traditions like trimming the tree, warming hot chocolate on the stove-top, and baking gingerbread men. Getting into the spirit means embracing joyful cheer of holiday prints. Holiday leggings feature prints with all the nostalgic symbols that make the holidays so special, from poinsettias to snowmen, Christmas trees to reindeer, Fair Isle designs and snowflakes. In addition to welcoming the season, holiday leggings are also the most practical style choice in winter for curling up on the couch for Netflix marathons!

Holiday leggings follow in the fun new trend of proudly sporting the “ugly Christmas sweater”. For fondue parties and gift wrapping sessions with family and friends, either holiday leggings or Christmas sweaters should make an appearance, if not both! For neighborhood strolls to see the lights twinkling on homes and storefronts, be sure to pair leggings with cozy wardrobe items like fur-lined boots, wooly pullovers, and thick-knit scarves. Keeping things fun and playful in winter outfits is easy as can be with holiday leggings. Dresses don’t need to be packed away with the arrival of winter! If you’re headed to a casual family get-together, pair leggings with a cute dress for effortless style, with these tips in mind.

3 Tips on Wearing Dresses Over Leggings

1. Dress LengthPicking the right dress length is essential in nailing the dress over leggings look. Choose shift dresses, shirt dresses, or tunic dresses. These styles tend to have shorter hems, often existing somewhere between a dress and a shirt, making leggings crucial as the hemline would be too revealing. Mid-length looks as seen on drop-waist dresses also look good over dresses, but dresses longer than knee-length should not be worn over leggings. Shift dresses have a simple short and sweet look, and are perfect for holiday parties paired with a statement necklace.

2. Pile on the KnitsThe coziest pieces in a winter closet are thick knits. From scarves to big pullover sweaters, winter knits conjure up memories of ski trips and bundling up against the cold. Plus, chunky knit layers instantly transition a dress to winter fashion.

3. Dress fitThe stretch factor is crucial for holiday meals. Between Thanksgiving feasts and holiday party extravaganzas, you’ll be so much happier if you’re wearing a pair of holiday leggings and a roomy dress, instead of anything with a zipper! And the same general rules for leggings apply when wearing a dress over leggings, which means since the leggings are fitted, the top should be looser. But that doesn’t mean choosing shapeless dresses. Babydoll or empire waist dresses can be too loose through the waist, while a draped tunic top that’s fitted over the hips creates a more feminine silhouette.

Baby, it’s cold outside! But winter fashion is anything but drab with the help of festive seasonal patterns adorning leggings. Warmth, texture, and pattern are the words to keep in mind for cold-weather style. Nordic leggings infuse winter outfits with Scandinavian style, and the chic pattern adds visual interest to layered ensembles.

Nordic fashion and Copenhagen street style are known for strong silhouettes, modern minimalism, bold use of color, and great design. Keeping these Nordic inspirations in mind, build layered outfits in monochrome layers of navy, black, white, and tan with pops of color and defined tailoring. Nordic inspired winter outfits are perfectly completed with sheepskin lined boots, chunky knit sweaters, and slouchy parkas.

A more casual approach to dressing on winter vacation is livened up by intricate prints and luxe textures. Nordic patterns are one of the most stylish prints for winter with their ski-resort vibe, and make putting together a winter outfit easier than going down the bunny slope. Mix in luxurious fabrics like faux fur and elaborate knits.

While Nordic leggings work in outfits that are holiday party classy and off-duty weekend style, they are also perfect for lounging around at home. Pull on a pair of Nordic leggings at home on lazy Sunday mornings when your only plans are eggs, french toast, and coffee with the family. And when the weather outside is frightful, turn your home into a cozy retreat from the frost with these must-haves!

Winter Accessorizing: Metallics

There’s more to winter fashion than puffer coats! Add a big style boost to simple winter outfits by accessorizing. Holiday parties are one of the most wonderful times of the year for getting dressy and adding glitz you wouldn’t wear on an everyday basis, though the best metallic statement pieces can be worn for coffee dates and holiday shopping too. Metallics go with the icy cool feeling of the season. A little sparkle goes a long way to looking festive, which is why gold can be seen everywhere on the holiday party circuit. White and gold are a chic holiday pairing, but don’t neglect gold’s less ostentatious cousins, silver and copper. A big watch or statement necklace can look pretty peeking through winter layers. A chunky metallic necklace can even be worn over your coat, instead of under for a fashionable statement. Remember that less is more, and one or two items that sparkle will do the trick.

5 Winter Essentials
for the home

1. Soft ThrowsWrapping a throw blanket around your shoulders is not only cozy, it saves money on the heating bill. Throws in soft fabrics turn a gloomy winter day into the perfect excuse to curl up on the couch all afternoon.

2. Soft SlippersSince bathroom and kitchen tiles stay stubbornly cold, fuzzy slippers are an absolute must-have.

3. Bright GlowThe warm glow of a candle makes any room feel instantly more cheerful. And all the wonderful winter scents to choose from transform your home into a winter wonderland of forest pine, red currant, and amber.

4. Flannel ForeverMake your bed with flannel sheets, and you’ll want to stay in bed all day long. Falling asleep in flannel is one of the coziest perks of winter.

5. Hearty SoupSimmering vegetables and stews cooking on the stove top fill the kitchen with hearty aromas, so break out the crock pot and fill it with the season’s delicious root vegetables.

4 Mix & Match
Winter Essentials

1. Chelsea bootsMeet the cold weather style workhorse that every winter wardrobe needs. Chelsea boots are the style soulmate of leggings since they elongate the slim line of your legs. They are perfect for dressy and casual ensembles alike. Plus, slip on boots make them a must for travel days and style on the go.

Knit Scarf: When your number one style priority is staying warm, a cozy knit scarf will be your go-to on repeat. The bigger the better.

2. Wool PeacoatA peacoat in camel, navy, or black is the final layering piece in winter outfits. Look for classic tailoring and a simple silhouette. The cutest peacoats have unique wood or brass buttons and a slight flare or swing at the bottom that falls to hip length for a slimming shape.

3. Gloves & HatsWool mittens or elegant, ladylike gloves are winter standbys that keep your hands toasty warm. From beanies to berets to wide-brimmed vintage inspired hats, covering up any bad hair day is a breeze. It’s these little finishing touches that differentiate summer accessorizing from winter accessorizing, so have fun with them!

4. Structured BagWinter is the season for the stylish carry-all, a structured bag that works well with clean lines and neutrals. When you’re all covered up in a big coat, a purse is the most visible accessory for adding put-together sophistication to winter outfits.

Leggings are the happy place where comfy and chic meet. Never is that more true than in winter! On frosty mornings when it’s so cold you consider pulling the sheets over your head and ignoring your alarm clock, it’s time to reach for fleece. Fleece leggings are thick and cozy, as comforting as a cup of tea. Pair fleece leggings with warm layers like an oversized cable knit sweater, a plaid flannel top, or a wool sweater dress for the coldest winter days. When it comes to footwear and outerwear choices, warm winter boots and a belted coat finish any leggings outfit.

Top 5 Winter Bucket List

1. Cocoa CallingSipping hot chocolate at a ski lodge is a quintessential winter activity. Whether you fly down the slopes, or just watch out the window while happily tucked away from the cold, be sure to make it to the snow.

2. Roaring FireFeeding logs into a wood-burning fire is a nostalgic moment to enjoy every year. Snuggling up near a warm fire, ideally with a good book, makes for a perfect winter evening.

3. Ice QueenGet the whole family together and go ice skating for one of the most memorable outings of the season. A hot chocolate is the best way to warm up afterwards!

4. DIY DarlingWith a long weekend ahead of you and nothing on your calendar, set aside the afternoon to craft! Making DIY holiday gifts is fun and lends a homemade touch to giving. Try your hand at bath salts or candles in vintage tea cups, a cookie mix or mini succulent gardens in unexpected containers.

5. Festive FeteThrowing a casual holiday party is one of the highlights of the season. It’s nice to keep things low-stress since the holidays are busy and full of social commitments, so consider hosting a simple wine and cheese pairings party or a grown-up cookie decorating party with cocktails.

Fleece Washing Tip

Ever notice that fleece clothing items tend to wear out after a few too many times through the washer and dryer? To extend the life of your fleece, wash in cold water or in a mesh lingerie bag. Otherwise they can snag or have pilling (those annoying little balls of lint) build up. You can also avoid pilling by washing your leggings inside out and allowing them to air dry, to minimize the amount that the fabric gets rubbed up against other clothes in the dryer.

Some things are best enjoyed when it’s chilly out. If you don’t want to be sniffling the whole time, getting all bundled up in flannel and fleece is a must!
