Motherhood: All the Cliches Are True

Posted: May 12 2014

Today, we have Grace from Camp Patton sharing a small slice of her experiences with motherhood. If you’re looking for a new daily read, check out her blog. Consider yourself warned: you’ll be hooked.

I’m a relatively new mom compared to a lot of the motherhood veterans in the world, my short stint as a parent has taught me more life lessons than all those I learned throughout my many years in school. I’m challenged and rewarded on the daily but rarely take the time to reflect on the big picture that is parenthood. I’m so happy White Plum asked me to write a bit about my experience because taking a step back from the day to day chaos did my heart a lot of good. When it comes to motherhood I think it’s safe to say that all of the sappy cliches are completely true.

“you will love your baby instantly … ”

I’ll never forget the moment I first saw our firstborn in the delivery room. It was a big fat combination of love, contentment, and a healthy dose of sheer terror. The surprising thing is that even after delivering my fourth baby a couple of weeks ago the instantaneous bond felt just as new and exciting as if she were my first.

“being a parent is the most rewarding job in the world … ”

Very True!

Not that I had any super challenging positions gracing my resume prior to entering the ranks of motherhood. However I’ll admit that even wrapping up an intense and trying year of teaching high school English doesn’t hold a flame to the satisfaction that comes with helping my kids reach new milestones (potty training, anyone??)

“time flies”

I hate to admit this one but .. true!

I watched my oldest feed my youngest this morning and felt like I’d blinked and gone from struggling to get my firstborn to successfully take a bottle to this exact moment … three and half years and three more kids later.

But just like all of the more sentimental and trite thoughts about parenthood have proven to be true … the more realistic and difficult cliches are spot on as well …

“motherhood is the most difficult job in the world”

sometimes .. it feels that way!

The tough love aspect of parenting always breaks my heart and sometimes there are days that I’m desperately looking for some sort of time out option so that I can snag a five minute power nap. It would be weird if it was all rainbows and smiling butterflies though, right?

“parenthood is exhausting”

the most true.

I remember when my husband and I were dating long distance we would talk on the phone for hours every night - sometimes as late as 1 or 2 in the morning. I had to be at work at 9:00 every morning and my commute was an hour long. I would love to go back in time and laugh at my daily complaints about my alleged lack of sleep.

“babies change everything”

They do! I’ll be the very first mom to admit that babies wreak havoc on your formerly peaceful life. I always worry about the potential changes that come with a new baby and how it will affect his or her older siblings. I’m always surprised in the best ways possible when I find that even the toughest toddler crowds can be wooed by a teeny tiny newborn baby …

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there - especially to my own who taught me more about successful parenting than she’ll ever know.

And a huge thank you to White Plum for having me. It was a great pleasure!!
